Turf translocation at The Isle of Grain to Shorne Gas Pipeline

The National Grid constructed a 21km underground gas pipeline from the Isle of Grain to Shorne, passing through ecologically sensitive areas, including an SSSI and an RSPB reserve. Inscapes worked with AMEC and National Grid to develop an environmental strategy, lifting, cataloguing, and reinstating over 14,000m² of natural turfgrass. Using specialist equipment, the turf and topsoil were carefully relocated to preserve the native seed bank before being reinstated.

Restoration of the Alton Barnes White Horse

The restoration of the Alton Barnes White Horse, undertaken on behalf of Natural England, involved reshaping and resurfacing the historic chalk figure while preserving the surrounding environment. Given its location within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, careful planning was required to avoid disturbing the native grasses and wildlife. To achieve this, the limestone was pre-bagged at the quarry, transported via farm tracks to the top of Milk Hill, and then individually airlifted by helicopter onto the figure, ensuring minimal impact on the landscape.

Gas pipeline in the Brecon Beacons

Inscapes played a crucial role in mitigating the environmental impact of the South Wales Gas Pipeline as it passed through the Brecon Beacons. Working closely with ecologists, environmental scientists, the Countryside Council for Wales, and the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, we carefully translocated, maintained, and replaced over 60,000 square metres of turf. This specialist work ensured the protection of sensitive habitats and soils, preserving the natural landscape while facilitating the construction of the UK’s largest high-pressure gas pipeline.

Woodland Planting

Inscapes were tasked with creating a native scrubland and introducing newts into the area. Over a period of 5 weeks, our team carefully prepared the ground using a grid system for accurate planting. We successfully planted 43,000 Corylus Avellana, 17,200 Crataegus Monogyna, 4,860 Ilex Aquifolium, 8,600 Prunus Spinosa, and 43 Oak trees. An additional 8,600 plants were added later in the year to further enhance the habitat.
